Stain removal and Rug Care Maintenance

Like everything else today, rugs need special care to ensure long life. Regular cleaning using adequate treatments will help extend the life of your rug. For spot removal it is highly recommended that all spills be cleaned immediately. Research shows that up to 90% of spots and stains from spills can be prevented if cleaned right away.

Stains are a product of water damage (colour run), light damage (fading), pet urine, and spilling food or drinks on to the rug. The attempt is always to try and remove as much of the stain as possible through the process of cleaning. If the stain is not removed completely through this process, the there are tthree other options, Spot Removal, Re-Dyeing, and Re-Weaving. The objective, of course, is to get the affected area to look as close to the original as possible. When our technicians visit your home they will let you know what can be done to fix the stain(s) on your rug and how much improvement you can expect to see. The most important factor in Stain Removal is time. The longer a stain remains on a rug, the more difficult it is to remove it. In the case of spills:

- Gently press a few paper towels over the affected area to absorb the excess liquid.
- Do Not Rub
- Do not treat the area with detergents and other household products as they may interfere   with the products we use.

Spot Removal

Depending on the type of stain, very small amounts of various products are applied to the affected area to test their effectiveness. Once the right product is identified, it is then applied to the rest of the stained area to achieve the same result.

Assuming the stained area was not completely restored through Spot Removal, the stain can go through Re-Dyeing as the next step of the Stain Removal process. Re-Dyeing is the process of manually re-painting each knot with the proper dye in order to restore it to its original colour.

When no other steps in the Stain Removal process have been successful, Re-Weaving offers a final option to restore the rug to its original condition. In this process, the damaged area of the rug is cut out entirely, new foundation is placed in its place, and the missing area is completely rewoven from scratch.
